discursive design

Over the last several decades, design has been increasingly involved in conceptual and critical work. Unfortunately formal analysis and understanding has not kept pace, as this design activity is often ignored, marginalized, and even cast off as “art.”

The book is intended to shed light upon discursive design, locating it within a loose typology of design activity that also includes: commercial design, experimental design, and responsible design.

After distinguishing discursive design from these other forms and from art, we will provide a framework that will help in its legitimization, and offer practicing designers more firm ground on which to operate.

While the book will contribute to design theory, its primary aim is to problematize discursive design so as to empower designers who are interested in becoming more intellectual and vocal with their work, and to help unify and build this important field of practice.
